Johann Friedrich Dietler
Solothurn, 1804 — 1874

Johann Friedrich Dietler (1804, Solothurn – 1874, Bern) was the son of the painter Joseph Felix Dietler. After schooling under Charles Germann in Solothurn and spending eleven years in Paris as Antoine-Jean Gros’s pupil, Dietler returned to Switzerland and made a name for himself as a portraitist. His portraits were in high demand among the patrician families of Bern, Solothurn, Fribourg, and Basel. For his genre paintings he found the motifs in the Bernese Oberland. In addition to portrait and genre painting, Dietler devoted himself to landscape studies and historical paintings. Later, he worked at the Bernese art school as a professor.
