The German-British painter and graphic artist Arnold Gerstl (1888, Prague – 1957, Windsor) trained at the art academies in Prague, Vienna, Berlin and Paris. After World War I, he became a member of the Luitpold Group and participated, annually, in the Munich art exhibitions at the Glaspalast during the years 1928 to 1931. In 1933, Gerstl emigrated to England, where he worked as a curator at the Burton Art Gallery in Bideford from 1946 onwards. The focus of Gerstl's work has always been the individual, which he often positions in somber, pictorial worlds exhibiting expressionistic elements on account of his reduced use of forms and a characteristic expressiveness.
